Description:

Pre-Columbian, Central America, Panama, Gran Cocle culture, Macaracas type, ca. 800 to 1200 CE. A hand-built and highly burnished pottery dish known as a frutero, featuring a flared pedestal foot. The shallow basin is adorned with a highly abstract creature - perhaps a crocodilian standing upright like a monkey or human? This "split representation" style often depicts a blend of multiple animals and perhaps insects! The dish's surface is slipped in beige, contrasting with vibrant orange, purple, and black pigments, with the distinctive purple hue indicative of the Macaracas style. Size: 7" Diameter x 3.75" H (17.8 cm x 9.5 cm)

Provenance: Estate of Peter H. Tillou Collection, thence by descent. Acquired in the 1990s, collection # 273. Appraised by Marianne Huber in 2014.
