Description:

Pre-Columbian, Central America, Panama, Gran Cocle, Macaracas type, ca. 800 to 1200 CE. A lovely pottery pedestal dish exhibiting an orange-hued ground around the pedestal foot as well as a cream-colored ground within the shallow basin. The basin is decorated with an abstract saurian creature that exhibits barbed protrusions lining its serpentine body as well as a mouth full of razor-sharp teeth. The black, red, and purple pigments are characteristic of Macaracas-type pottery. Size: 10.25" L x 10.375" W x 6.25" H (26 cm x 26.4 cm x 15.9 cm)

Provenance: Estate of Peter H. Tillou Collection, thence by descent. Acquired in the 1990s, collection # 220. Appraised by Marianne Huber in 2014.

  • Condition: Bowl professionally reattached to top of pedestal stem, with resurfacing and overpainting along small amounts of new material and break lines. Abrasions and minor fading to pigment, otherwise in nice condition. Wonderful preservation to abstract zoomorph motif within basin.
