Description:

Africa, Northern Nigeria, Nok, ca. 500 BCE to 200 CE. A finely, modeled terracotta head from one of the oldest African centers of figural sculpture and ironworks. This head displays characteristic traits of the classical Nok style including an elongated head, high smooth forehead, wide open triangular eyes with perforated pupils, boldly delineated lids, and an elaborately detailed coiffure. The naturalism displayed in the modeling of the nose provides a rich contrast to the marvelously stylized, abstract eyes. A sophisticated example, still retaining some of the smooth slipped surface, even when more than two thousand years ago! Size: 4.75" L x 3.5" W x 5" H (12.1 cm x 8.9 cm x 12.7 cm)

Provenance: Ex Peter Arnovick Collection, Los Altos CA
