Description:

W. Clarence McGrath (American, 1938-2007). Native American Girl. Oil on board, n.d. Signed at lower left. An endearing portrait painting by American artist W. Clarence McGrath featuring a young Native American girl, adorned in a turquoise necklace and long-dangling earrings as she gazes to the left. Rendered in liberal, open brushstrokes, the child wears a bright, tangelo-hued blouse with her dark black hair loosely pulled back into a bun by a cream-colored chiffon that cascades down her back. Broad strokes of pastel and neutral tones fill the background, focusing the viewer's attention on the charming youth who elegantly contrasts her blurred surroundings; her own attention being elsewhere, outside of the composition. Size: 11.5" W x 13.5" H (29.2 cm x 34.3 cm) Size: 18.24" W x 20.25" H (46.3 cm x 51.4 cm)

A native of the American southwest, W. Clarence McGrath began life in Arizona, son of a sharecropper. To help support the family, he worked as a farm and ranch hand and as a sheepherder. In his spare time, he painted and sketched. Now known as a realist painter who focuses on the human element, McGrath's work is often compared to that of the Russian painter, Nicolai Fechin, in technique and subject matter.
