Clarence E. Braley (American, 1854-1927). Home on waterfront. Watercolor and pastel on paper, n.d. Signed at lower right. A beautiful painting by self-taught, American artist Clarence E. Braley depicting a tranquil landscape of an old farmhouse beside a body of water, perhaps an estuary. The serene vista features the house near the center of the work surrounded by free-growing grass and lush trees, all rendered in hues of sepia, gray, black, and white. Clarence Braley was a self-taught landscape painter whose favorite mediums were watercolor and pastel. He was active in New Bedford, Massachusetts from 1875 to 1925 and participated in the New Bedford Art Association. He also exhibited at the Boston Art Club and the Art Institute of Chicago. All is set in a custom matte and frame with suspension wire on verso for display. Size of painting: 29.25" W x 9.25" H (74.3 cm x 23.5 cm); of frame: 41.5" W x 21.75" H (105.4 cm x 55.2 cm)

  • Condition: Signed at lower right. Set behind glass in custom matte and frame; has not been examined outside of glass. Some small areas of stains, mostly seen in sky, but do not affect main imagery. Otherwise, painting and frame appear to be in overall good condition. Suspension wire on verso for display.
