Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Chupicuaro, ca. 500 BCE to 300 CE. A striking hand-built redware bowl that sits atop a trio of large, hollow, globular legs. The basin of the vessel is uniformly painted in a rich signature red hue accented by three thin black lines that encircle its slightly flared lip. The vessel's legs are its most intriguing feature - spectacular spherical forms, each leg is angled up to the basin and is decorated with a black on white linear motif boasting a slight red accent. Small pottery balls remain in the legs' hollow cavities emanating a light rattle sound when jolted, perhaps used in ceremonial contexts. A beautiful minimalist example with prominent and characteristically distinct features. Size: 9" Diameter x 5.6" H (22.9 cm x 14.2 cm)
