Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Chupicuaro, ca. 500 BCE to 300 CE. A charming hand-built pottery nude female figure and a baby in her arms. She has slender legs, delineated genitalia, bare breasts, and her arms bend inward to cradle her infant to her bosom. Around her neck are necklace appliques and she also wears earrings, and a tall headdress adorned with applied ovals and incised lines. Her elongated head features dramatically slanted eyes, pinched nose, and applied lips. This style is often known as a "pretty lady" which accentuated physical femininity that may have been the ideal of womanhood and fertility in Mesoamerica. Size: 6.25" L x 2.25" W (15.9 cm x 5.7 cm)

Provenance: private Hidden Valley Lake, California, USA collection, acquired May 2020, Lot 70641, Heritage Auctions, Dallas, Texas, USA
