Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Chupicuaro, ca. 500 BCE to 300 CE. A hand-built pottery foot-shaped vessel with a rounded base with five protruding toes, a thick neck which doubles as the ankle, a tall rim with a slightly-flared lip, and a pair of pierced suspension loops. The front of the ankle depicts a minimalist visage with a petite nose, two eyes each comprised of a pair of light indentations, a gaping mouth formed by puffy lips, and smooth cheeks. The midsection of the ankle is adorned with a dense, black-hued checkerboard pattern atop a register of tan pigment, and the vessel's highly-burnished exterior is coated in a thick layer of red slip save for the base. Size: 5.875" L x 4.2" W x 5.5" H (14.9 cm x 10.7 cm x 14 cm).

Provenance: private Southern California, USA collection, acquired in the 1970s to mid-1980s
