Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Chupicuaro culture, ca. 500 BCE to 300 CE. A hand-built conjoined male and female couple standing atop delineated, attenuated legs with rotund abdomens and lengthy arms. Each figure boasts coffee-bean-shaped adornments, perhaps small shells, on their necklaces and armbands as well as exposed genitalia. Their heads are flat with pinched noses, diagonally-slit eyes, and large discoid earspools, and both heads are lined with an incised head band and a central, red-orange-hued amulet. Typical Chupicuaro figures are created as singular figures, so this conjoined example is one of extreme rarity! Custom wooden display stand included. Size: 3.375" W x 3.25" H (8.6 cm x 8.3 cm); 4.125" H (10.5 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private Southern California, USA collection, acquired in the 1970s to mid-1980s
