Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Chupicuaro, ca. 400 to 100 BCE. A striking polychromed terracotta four-lobed vessel standing on three bulbous rattle feet. The front lobe is adorned with a projecting bird-like head, and on the opposite end a perky tab tail. All lobes are decorated with an intricate black on cream geometric design; the ground painted in red-orange. Rattle legged vessels such as these were traditionally used in ritual ceremonies or dances, held above an individual's head so as to create a percussive rattle when in motion. Size: 5-1/4"H x 8"W.
