Description:

Pre-Columbian, Western Mexico, Guanajuato River Valley, ca. 300 to 100 BCE. This vessel impresses us with its classic form, wondrous slip decoration, and sonorous quality as a rattle bowl. On the exterior, the painted geometric motifs comprised of diamond and triangular shapes outlined in red and filled with a brown and cream brick-like pattern are reminiscent of textile designs of the Pre-Columbian world. The rim is ornamented with a cream colored diamond pattern framed by a row of red triangles and a row of brown triangles. All is supported by pointed feet that serve as musical rattles. 6"D at widest x 2 3/4"T.

Provenance: Ex-Gilbert Martin, Georgia, USA
