Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Guanajuato Valley, Chupicuaro, ca. 500 BCE to 300 CE. A hand-built pottery bowl with a round but stable base, squat walls, and a thick rim surrounding the shallow basin. The top half of the highly burnished vessel is first covered with vermilion-hued slip and accentuated with thin black lines that fill many of the continuous, cream-hued, negative resist geometric motifs. Rectangular panels are enclosed by the black-line-filled areas and contain serrated, diagonally oriented bars that flank shorter, rectangular spaces. Size: 9.625" Diameter x 3.4" H (24.4 cm x 8.6 cm)

  • Condition: Minor nicks and abrasions to base, walls, rim, and basin, with fading and darkening to some areas of original pigment, and light encrustations within basin, otherwise intact and very good. Nice earthen deposits and great original pigmentation remains visible throughout.
