Description:

Pre-Columbian, Guanajuato Valley, western Mexico, Chupicuaro culture, ca. 200 BCE. Rare polychrome cylindrical pottery vessel in corseted form with snake in high relief coiled from base to upper rim. Possibly depicting the Mexican Coral Snake with alternating bands of red, yellow and black. Harkens to my youth in the Boy Scouts and the mantra "Red and black, friend of Jack; red and yellow - kill a fellow." As you can see with this vessel, we have a distinct red and yellow… The bite from the Coral Snake is always quite painful and occasionally fatal. Size: 4.5" W x 6.125" H (11.4 cm x 15.6 cm)

Provenance: East Coast collection, New York Gallery, New York City, New York, USA, acquired before 2010
