Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Chupicuaro, ca. 3rd to 2nd century BCE. Finely build terracotta bowl with beautiful polychrome finish, handpainted with sinuous snake with chocolate brown skin decorated with a cream-colored meandering detail. A cream on brown meander around the rim as well. All on red background. In addition, nine small four-legged critters or perhaps four-pointed star motifs painted in cream adorn the surface. 4" in diameter (10.16 cm) x 2-1/4"H (5.7 cm). Provenance: Ex-private McDonald collection, Houston, TX acquired at auction between 1982 and 1994.
