Description:

Pre-Columbian, Western Mexico, Chupicuaro, ca. 500 BCE to 300 CE. A remarkably preserved, rare hand built ceramic bedded effigy figure, depicting a venerated ancestor being born on a pallet. The pallet has a double arched canopy, and the figure is tied to the bed, suggesting that he or she has died. The figure is adorned with jewelry on his or her visible face, and the pallet and figure have painted red and white highlights. Size: 3.4" W x 2.15" H (8.6 cm x 5.5 cm)

Provenance: private New York, New York, USA collection; ex-Albert J. and Monique Grant collection, New York, USA, acquired in the 1950s to 1960s - item #ND6; acquired from Arte Primitivo (May 22, 2017 lot #36)
