Description:

Pre-Columbian, Western Mexico, Guanajuato River Valley, Chupicuaro culture, ca. 300 to 100 BCE. The vibrancy of the painted decorative programs on these vessels is remarkable when one ponders the fact that they are more than two-thousand years old! Beyond the richly, ornate geometric patterns that flow over the surfaces of this pair, each vessel also boasts a charming form. The larger vessel greets us with a visage of a bird with open beak, its body continues terminating in an abstract tail end. The smaller vessel is softly modeled in a heart shape. Groups of painted arrows grace the sides of the piece, and a nine-pointed star adorns the backside. Bird-shaped bowl - 8"L x 5-1/2"W at widest x 4-1/4"H at highest; heart-shaped bowl 5"L x 4"W x 2 1/2"T Provenance: Ex-George Martin Collection, Georgia, USA All items in this auction are legal to buy/sell under U.S. statute covering cultural patrimony per United States Code 2600, CHAPTER 14 -- CONVENTION ON CULTURAL PROPERTY, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
