Description:

Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Guanajuato Valley, ca. 500 BCE-300 CE. The breadth of the Chupicuaro ceramic tradition never ceases to amaze us. The indigenous of this culture used a vivid palette and bold patterns that set their ceramics apart. While these artists drew upon the traditions of the Colima, Jalisco, and Nayarit cultures of West Mexico, they experimented with forms and pigments and ultimately created an artform that inspired much of the pottery of the American Southwest. This example boasts the characteristic Chupicuaro red finish with some cream geometric detailing circumambulating the inner rim and adding interest to the tripod feet and underside of the piece. The form is intriguing as well with its near spherical shape incised with striations on the surface of the upper section - all supported by openwork feet that serve to raise and highlight the 'global' appearance of the piece. 5-1/2"H x 6-1/4"D
