Description:

Pre-Columbian, Ecuador, Chorrera culture, ca. 9th to 4th century BCE. This is an amazing hand-built pottery vessel in the form of a rotund person lying on their back, the spout opening in the center of the broad stomach. The hollow body is a hemispherical shape with a rounded base, the arms are indicated by an etched line and pinched nubs for hands and feet, and at once side is a thick ovoid head. The visage appears sleepy or trance like- with squinty eyes that have narrow lines across the bulging lids, and a thin linear mouth under a protruding nose, and the ears are pierced for additional ornamentation. The stomach is impressed with a linear and stippled pattern that seems to flow and radiate around the neck and rim opening. This vessel is of the type commonly referred to as "belly" bowls, the stomach patterning perhaps depicting textile patterns or body tattoos. Size: 7" L x 6.25" W x 4.5" H (17.8 cm x 15.9 cm x 11.4 cm); 6" H (15.2 cm) on included custom stand.
