Description:

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A gorgeous cast bronze patera in excellent condition. A long handle projects from one side of the shallow, round bowl, which has a flanged, rounded rim. The patera stands on a round foot with multiple rings of concentric circles cast on the underside of the foot. The handle is flattened and strap-like, in an elongated hourglass form, with a keyhole-like cut out and small bobble projecting from its end. The surface is wonderfully smooth and the weight is pleasing in the hand. The patera is an offering dish, used to pour libations and to make sacrifices using wine and other liquids. Some may also have been used for serving food at symposia. Size: 12" L x 7" W x 1.75" H (30.5 cm x 17.8 cm x 4.4 cm)
