Description:

Pre-Columbian, Maya Territories, Late Classic Period, ca. 550 to 900 CE. A stunning omphacite jade pendant of a lord's visage, carved from a rich apple green, the signature hue of the Maya's favorite stone! The ruler stares forward portraying the classic stylized facial features formed via careful string-cut techniques, a headdress frames the head, and part of his pectoral necklace or costume extends downward. As was the custom, the artisan worked with the natural shape of the stone rather than lose any precious surface area- hence the asymmetrical neckline. Drilled suspension holes are oriented along the top edge, enabling this piece to be worn as a pendant or clothing ornament by a person prestige and power - either in life or death as a grave good. This spectacular pendant is pristine and choice and could easily be strung on a cord or chain as a wearable piece! Size: 1.42" L x 0.75" W (3.6 cm x 1.9 cm)

Jade was revered by the Maya not only for its beauty, but also because it had spiritual power - it was believed to be the embodiment of the wind and the "breath" that formed the Maya soul. In addition, scholars argue that its color was associated with water and vegetation. While the Maya used jade beads to create impressive jewelry, we also know that they placed jade beads in the mouths of the dead, perhaps as a means of extending the circle of life. Furthermore, many scholars have argued that the demand for jadeite contributed to the rise of long distance trading networks as well as the rise of urban centers in ancient Mesoamerica.
