Description:

Magna Graecia, Southern Italy, Apulia/Ignazia, ca. 340 to 320 BCE. A beautiful wheel-thrown pottery cup with a tiered footed base, a rotund body with an indented shoulder, a tall, flaring rim, and an applied loop handle. Red bands outline the junction of the foot and body as well as rim and body, and painted fugitive yellow and white pigments comprise the spiraling and curving adornments. Paint has flowed down into the interior of the cup, however the unpainted clay surface is still visible lower within the interior. A fine example of Gnathian ware, distinguished by its colorful decoration applied directly to the deep black-glazed surface. Size: 2.875" W x 4.625" H (7.3 cm x 11.7 cm).
