Description:

Classical World, Magna Graecia, southern Italy, Apulia, ca. 300 BCE. A beautiful small cup, with a small strap handle coming off the shoulder and rolling forward onto the lower rim. The rim flares outward at the top; the round foot has a series of rolled steps that indicate the incredible attention to detail on this cup. Red bands outline the junction of foot and body and rim and body; painted yellow and white curving and spiraling designs also provide nice detail. Paint has flowed down into the interior of the cup but the unpainted clay surface is still visible lower down inside of it. This is an example of Gnathian ware, distinguished by its colorful decoration applied directly to a deep black glaze on the surface of the vase. Size: 3.75" W x 4.6" H (9.5 cm x 11.7 cm)
