Description:

Ancient Greece, ca. late 5th century BCE. An attractive lidded bronze pyxis of a squat, spool-like form, the lid with an attached loop handle affixed to a circular fitting that is attached to the face. Note the elegant silhouette of the concave side walls, its edges finely adorned with a decorative bands that resemble chain. The lower container sits upon a flat ring base. The name pyxis derived from Corinthian covered boxes that were actually made of wood harvested from the boxwood tree called puksos. This is clearly a special example, probably used for keeping trinkets or jewelry - rare to find with cover as well. Size: 3" W x 1.875" H (7.6 cm x 4.8 cm)
