Description:

Native American, Southern United States, Missouri, Cole County, Archaic Period, ca. 5000 to 1000 BCE. This is an interesting stone tool from an early Native American culture that is hand-pecked into an elongated and fluted form known as a boat stone due to the shape. This example is made from a dark green and mottled white hardstone that is highly polished to a pleasantly smooth texture throughout. While boat stones and other similar artifacts such as bannerstones are found across North America their exact use remains unclear. Research suggests these tools were probably used to weight an atlatl and increase its efficiency. If indeed they were used to weight atlatls, they would have been tied between the handle and the hook end where the dart or spear was placed. Size: 4" L x 0.8" W x 1" H (10.2 cm x 2 cm x 2.5 cm)
