Description:

Pre-Columbian, Costa Rica/Panama, Chiriqui, ca. 800 to 1200 CE. A wonderful brownware pottery vessel with a rattle filled handleadorned at one end by a wide-eyed, large snouted (with flaring nostrils) head topped by a perched double-headed mythical creature with a lizard-like head at one end and a beaked bird head at the other. The deep bowl/scoop is decorated as well; it presents three bird heads adorning the rim, a crimped border around the rim, and concave walls with three trios of crimped vertical bands beneath the bird heads. Nicely burnished and in fine condition. Size: 14.125" L x 2.625" H (35.9 cm x 6.7 cm)

  • Condition: Minor surface wear with scratches/scuffs commensurate with age. Wonderful lustrous, burnished finish on all but mythical creature effigy at end of handle. Handle still contains rattles which produce a pleasant percussive sound. Bowl/scoop repaired from four pieces with restoration over the break lines - nicks to the rim.
