Description:

Pre-Columbian, Panama/Costa Rica, Chiriqui culture, ca. 1200 to 1500 CE. A hand-built pottery vessel with a hemispherical basin, a squat, flared rim, and a trio of hollow conical legs which contain small pottery balls which make a rattling sound when jostled. Atop each leg is a stylized armadillo with segmented, stippled bands, perky ears, curving legs, and a tapered snout with impressed eyes. Faint traces of original brown, orange, and red pigment are visible across the highly-burnished composition. Size: 6.25" W x 6" H (15.9 cm x 15.2 cm).

  • Condition: Repaired from multiple pieces, with small chips and light adhesive residue along break lines. Chips and abrasions to legs, body, and armadillos, with softening to some finer details, light encrustations, and fading to original pigmentation. Nice earthen deposits throughout.
