Description:

Pre-Columbian, Bolivia, Chiribaya, ca. 1100 to 1450 CE. An attractive polychrome terracotta pitcher - an intriguing human effigy form - comprised of a flat-bottomed globular body, a somewhat bulbous neck modeled in relief with facial features including coffee bean shaped eyes and mouth, a protruding nose and contiguous browline, and cup-shaped ears to represent an anthropomorphic head, and a single spout modelled above. Notice that the face is extensively painted with striations, stylized geometric motifs, and two swastika designs - age old good luck symbols that sadly appropriated a darker meaning in the 20th century - between the nose and eyes. The body compliments this with an equally impressive painted decorative program including mazelike stylized geometrics and step motifs, all in a handsome color scheme of chocolate brown, cream, orange, and red hues. Size: 8.625" in diameter x 10.25" H (21.9 cm x 26 cm)
