Description:

China, Yuan to Ming Dynasty, ca. 1271 to 1644 CE. This is a very interesting piece! It is a small pottery vessel that, due to a kiln misfire, has fused with other vessels. All three have some decoration on their greenish-white background glaze that appears brownish green but which may have been intended to be blue on white -- the kiln misfire would have disfigured the color as well as the shape. The vessel is wide and round with a very small mouth and a small foot; the dripping glaze over its unglazed foot is indicative of the style of the time period. A piece like this, known among archaeologists as a "waster", can be found in great quantities around kiln sites, where large numbers of such misfired pieces would have been discarded. This piece was probably being made for export. Size: 4.75" L x 4.5" W x 3.5" H (12.1 cm x 11.4 cm x 8.9 cm).

Provenance: Ex-Paul & Louise Bernheimer collection, Cambridge, MA and Laguna Woods, CA.
