East Asia, China, Yuan Dynasty, ca. 1279 to 1368 CE; Ming Dynasty, ca. 1368 to 1644 CE. A fine gathering of 4 hand-built pottery bowls, 2 from the Yuan Dynasty, and 2 from the Ming Dynasty. The first Yuan Dynasty bowl is of a squat form with a sandy beige glaze across the surfaces, and the second features a pale green glaze with incised linear motifs along the interior and exterior surfaces. The first Ming bowl features a pair of flying birds - perhaps cranes or phoenixes - in blue pigment across the white exterior. The second bowl bears a similar blue-on-white decorative motif with 4 mythological qilin creatures flying to the left amongst a cloudy setting. Size of largest (qilin bowl): 5.5" W x 2.25" H (14 cm x 5.7 cm)

  • Condition: Phoenix bowl has a small collapsed area within the basin that formed during the firing process as indicated by the glaze covering. Each vessel has light abrasions, fading to original pigment, and marine encrustations, otherwise intact and very good. Great preservation to colors and decorative motifs.
