Description:

China, mid to late 19th century. A WELL-CARVED, DAOIST WOODEN TEMPLE OR HOME ALTAR GOD. With a stern though not ferocious visage, this is not a Buddhist temple guardian but rather a Daoist god, probably representing a judge (note the Ming style headdress). His seated posture, hands astride, and stern visage add to the sense that this judge demands accountability in the afterlife. The layers of official costume are well-textured in the carving and what remains of the pigment. The facial expression and hands are exceptionally represented in this carving of a genre which often tends towards rigidity or folk caricature. 14" H. Provenance: Ex D. Smith collection All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
