Description:

China, Northern Wei Dynasty, ca. 386 -534 BCE. A rare and very important stone head of a Bodhisattva. Carved of gray schist, the long, slender face flanked by elongated ears and carved with full mouth and straight nose rising to curved brows elegantly arched over the eyes, the head surmounted by a flared crown. Size: 6.25"H (15.9 cm).

A similar head from the same period, same caves, recently hammered for $158,500 at Christie's, September 2010, Sale 2509, Lot 986.

Provenance: Published, Parke Bernet, Chinese Art from Collection of Tonying & Co, April 5, 1956. Receipt from sale available.
