Description:

East Asia, China, Warring States Period, ca. 475 to 221 BCE. A hand-built grayware pottery storage jar with a flat base, a compressed apple-shaped body with a rounded shoulder, and a splayed rim surrounding the cavernous basin. The exterior surfaces are adorned with trios of impressed lines in square shapes that alternate directions to create a checkerboard motif. The rough exterior texture on storage jars like this example increased the vessel's stability when resting in the earth as well as providing a minimalist decorative aesthetic. Size: 8.1" Diameter x 5.4" H (20.6 cm x 13.7 cm)

Provenance: private collection of the late Karming Wong; approximate date of acquisition: late 1970s to early 1980s
