Description:

East Asia, China, Warring States Period, ca. 475 to 221 BCE. A pair of matching leaded-bronze axle hubs from chariot wheels decorated with elaborate incised bands of interlacing spiral patterns known as kui ("snake" or "dragon") and leiwen (a motif of thunder). The pin that secured the axle and wheel in place is a removable peg with a mythical creature's face, known as a taotie, cast into the finial tip. A gorgeous green patina envelops most of the surface on both hubs, but small areas over the etched body have been cleaned to reveal the intricate motifs. Two wheeled chariots were used at this time for warfare, often carrying military leaders to monitor troops and to pursue and attack the enemy- the use of metals such as bronze for the fittings was crucial to ensure durability to withstand rough use in battle. Size: 2.75" Diameter x 2.5" H (7 cm x 6.4 cm)

Provenance: ex-John B. Kendrick II collection, Denver, Colorado, USA, acquired 1965 to 1990; John B. Kendrick II was that son of John B. Kendrick, Wyoming governor and US senator
