Description:

East Asia, China, Warring States Period, ca. 475 to 221 BCE. A wonderful example of an ancient sword type cast from bronze with a wide, straight blade, a guard, grip, and pommel. The pommel is ovular in shape and rests at the bottom of a spiralized handle with faint dot-shaped details. The guard, comprised of two outward-facing concentric concave semicircles, resembles the form of a trident when combined with the raised ridge running the length of the blade. While currently rounded on the tip, the blade would have been deadly-sharp and extremely dangerous in the hands of a skilled swordsman. Known as a jian, this style of double-edged straight sword has been used in China for 2500 years; this is a fairly short, one-handed version of the type. Size: 14" L x 1.875" W (35.6 cm x 4.8 cm); length of blade: 10.375" L (26.4 cm).

Provenance: private J. Connell collection, Massachusetts, USA; ex-Piscopo collection
