Description:

East Asia, China, Ming to Qing Dynasty, ca. 16th to 19th century CE. A porcelain stemmed cup with a pedestal neck, glazed in turquoise blue and featuring an incised sgraffito melon vine pattern on the bowl. The lower rim of the pedestal foot is decorated with an abstract foliate motif. The inner rim of the foot bears a six-character reign mark for Emperor Zhengde (1491 to 1521 CE). During the Qing dynasty, Ming-era emperor reign marks were sometimes used on later Qing porcelain, often for decorative or retroactive purposes. These marks were not intended to deceive but rather reflect Qing interest in Ming aesthetics or serve as a tribute to the earlier dynasty, though they were understood to signify Ming style rather than an actual Ming-era piece. Size: 3.75" Diameter x 3.5" H (9.5 cm x 8.9 cm).
