Description:

**Originally Listed At $150**

East Asia, China, Tang Dynasty, ca. 618 to 907 CE. An endearing mold-made terracotta votive sheep created for a tomb offering. The sheep is lying down with its legs tucked against its body. Rounded ovoid eyes, drooping ears, a short snout, and a petite mouth define the zoomorphic countenance. The underside reveals a hollow cavity. Pottery effigy figures were popular in Chinese burials and dozens, hundreds, or even thousands of others, whether sheep, other animals, or people, would have been placed in tombs to recreate the lifestyle of the deceased. Size: 2.75" L x 1.375" W x 2" H (7 cm x 3.5 cm x 5.1 cm)

Provenance: ex-Historia Antiques, Santa Monica, California, USA before 2012
