Lot 88
East Asia, China, Tang Dynasty, ca. 618 to 907 CE. A rare example of a stone carving depicting a woman of the court dressed in the height of fashion. She wears a stylish V-necked gown belted at the waist and has a dramatic symmetrical hairstyle that might remind you of Princess Leia. She was carved as part of a stele, probably from a tomb. Figures of women seem to have been reserved for the tombs of elite women, who are thought to represent attendants and maids beyond the grave. The Tang period is considered a relatively good one for Tang women and even saw the only Empress in Chinese history; other women obtained power as Daoist priestesses and courtesans. This lifelike statue of a woman may represent someone who had one of these roles. Size: 9.25" W x 27.5" H (23.5 cm x 69.8 cm)
Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection; ex Miko Micklautz collection, Hawaii, USA

Vlasic adds, "When I render the human form, I am digging into the person, pulling out what and who they are. I want to show their insides, for better or worse. By pushing and pulling the paint, the light and the shadow, I am laying them, and myself, bare on the canvas. It is my attempt to find the humanity, the God-spark, in them, and in me."

- Condition: Head and feet have been reattached with some overpaint along the repair lines. One of the feet is partially missing, but the statue stands easily on its own. Surface is weathered and pitted but much of the detail and form is well preserved. The piece was removed from a larger stele or other carving and the back is uneven but not jagged.
