Description:

China, Tang Dynasty, ca. 700 CE. This ceramic oxcart was created during the Tang Dynasty. Sculptors of this period created particularly finely modeled forms as exemplified here. Note how the artist rendered the corporeality and musculature of this animal. Clearly it was critical that the artist create a realistic portrayal of the beast of burden and demonstrate the significance of oxcarts during this period. Size: 17-1/2" L x 8" W x 8-1/2" H (9" H with stand).

Oxen were prized by the ancient Chinese and were used to carry goods and plow agricultural fields; however by the late Han Dynasty, oxcarts became peoples' primary mode of transport. The more oxen pulling the cart and the higher the canopies on the cart, the more elite the rider. Since oxen could pull a cart steadily, tables were oftentimes set in the cart so that passengers might also enjoy a mobile drinking party. Throughout history, Chinese writers have praised the noble spirit of this animal, penning words that implore readers to respect and revere oxen as these creatures would bear heavy loads without ever asking for anything in return. It is this character that also provided inspiration for many visual artists of the era. Beyond this rich iconography, the modeling technique and fine slipping of this earthenware masterwork are par excellence. Provenance: Ex-Splendors of the World.
