Description:

East Asia, China, Tang Dynasty, ca. 618 to 907 CE. A lovely hollow-molded terracotta sheep in a recumbent pose with folded legs tucked beneath its stocky body. A naturalistic head is supported atop a muscular neck and boasts drooping ears, a crested snout with slit-form nostrils, puffy jowls, and angular cheeks. Exposed areas of the light-brown buffware are visible where the espresso-hued pigment has worn away. Custom lucite display stand included. Size: 5.6" L x 3.1" H (14.2 cm x 7.9 cm); 3.75" H (9.5 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection, purchased in Hong Kong in the 1980s
