Description:

East Asia, China, Tang Dynasty, ca. 618 to 907 CE. A mold-formed terracotta tomb attendant figure depicting a dancing woman in flowing garments, captured in a dynamic pose with one arm gracefully raised. The surface retains much of its original pigments - white and red over the gray terracotta. Her long, flowing sleeves reflect the fashion of the period, with the movements of such sleeves playing an integral role in dances - a costume style that continues to inspire Chinese opera today. Under the Tang Dynasty, dancing reached its zenith as an art form, with institutions established to train skilled musicians and dancers for imperial courts. This pottery figure, known as mingqi, would have been buried as a funerary item to accompany the deceased in the afterlife, offering entertainment and companionship. Size: 5.5" L x 2.5" W x 12.25" H (14 cm x 6.4 cm x 31.1 cm)

Provenance: private London, UK collection; ex-private Bath, UK collection, acquired in Hong Kong in the 1980s - 1990s
