Description:

East Asia, China, Tang Dynasty, ca. 618 to 907 CE. A charming, hollow-molded pottery male attendant covered in pale-yellow straw glaze. He stands atop columnar legs, wears flowing pants and a belted knee-length robe, and holds his right arm across his bulbous abdomen. His head is tilted slightly to the right and exhibits almond eyes, a triangular nose, and thin lips, all beneath a simple cap with a pony tail draped down the nape of his neck. Size: 2.125" W x 6.9" H (5.4 cm x 17.5 cm).

Provenance: private Texas, USA collection; ex-Sotheby’s, Los Angeles "Fine Oriental Works of Art" auction (March 5, 1981, lot 1507)

  • Condition: Head reattached to neck, with small chips and light adhesive residue along break line. Small chips to base and some glazed areas, with softening to some finer details, and light fading to glaze coloration. Light earthen deposits throughout. Old inventory label on verso.
