Description:

East Asia, China, Tang Dynasty, ca. 618 to 907 CE. A mold-formed terracotta hollow tomb attendant, known as a mingqi, in the form of a woman. The figure depicts a woman standing gracefully, clad in long, flowing robes and holding a vessel in her hands. The surface retains much of its original painted pigment, showcasing the artistry of Tang funerary practices. Mingqi, or mortuary wares, were crafted to resemble people, animals, and structures, serving as symbolic companions for the deceased in the afterlife. These figures were believed to provide aid or entertainment, such as music or other recreations, reflecting the life the deceased once lived - or perhaps the life they aspired to have. Size: 3.6" L x 3.5" W x 13.75" H (9.1 cm x 8.9 cm x 34.9 cm)

Provenance: private London, UK collection; ex-private Bath, UK collection, acquired in Hong Kong in the 1980s - 1990s
