Description:

China, probably Tang Dynasty, ca. 618 to 907 CE. This is a marble torso and lower body of Buddha with the hands in the abhaya mudra, the "gesture of fearlessness", with the right hand held upright, palm facing outwards. The carving of the robe is particularly fine. The style of carving is dissimilar from most other examples, probably indicating that, although the carving is very fine, it was done by someone in a provincial location who did not see many other examples. Size: 2.5" L x 5" W x 9.25" H (6.4 cm x 12.7 cm x 23.5 cm).
