East Asia, China, Tang Dynasty, ca. 618 to 906 CE. A monumental marble basin of square form, adorned with incised decoration of 4 flowers, one protruding from each corner. Sitting upon a heavy base, the vessel presents thick, sturdy walls that rise to a broad rim over a shallow bowl. The exterior boasts scrolling floral motifs with each flower depicted as upside-down trefoil. Note how the bulging flowers at the corners alter the shape of the rim to make it resemble a quatrefoil. Size: 17.5" L x 17.7" W x 7.9" H (44.4 cm x 45 cm x 20.1 cm)

Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection, before 2010; ex-M. Kobiashi collection, Hawaii, USA, 1960-2000
