Description:

China, Tang Dynasty, ca. 618 to 906 CE. This is a white pottery equestrian figure, depicting a female rider positioned with her arms up as if she is pulling on reins (which may have been made of perishable material). The wears a short jacket belted over a tunic and pants, with her hair pulled up and bunched above her forehead under a cloth tied around her head. The horse is standing three-square, with the right front foor raised and its mouth open. There are traces of black, red, and white pigment. A figure like this would almost certainly have been made to be placed inside of a tomb. Size: 12" L x 9.25" W x 3.5" H (30.5 cm x 23.5 cm x 8.9 cm).
