Description:

East Asia, China, Tang Dynasty, ca. 618 to 907 CE. A lovely pair of hand-built pottery jars with spherical bodies supported by a trio of lion-paw feet. The first vessel exhibits a layer of sancai glaze of copper-orange and green hues with three stippled flowers around the shoulder, and the larger vessel bears matte green glaze across much of the body. Jars like these examples were perhaps used to contain trinkets or oils for the living or even offerings in tombs for the deceased. Size of largest (green glaze): 4.1" W x 2.9" H (10.4 cm x 7.4 cm)

Provenance: private New Jersey, USA collection; acquired New York City antique market, 1990s
