Description:

East Asia, northern China, Northern Wei Dynasty, ca. 386 to 534 CE. An enigmatic grey stone head with a huge coiffure whose densely incised pattern provides strong contrast to the relatively smooth face with almond-shaped eyes, flat nose, and closed, wide mouth below it. Size: 5" W x 5.5" H (12.7 cm x 14 cm); 8.75" H (22.2 cm) on included custom stand.

Lohan, also called Arhat, means Buddhist ascetic; the word is a transliteration of Sanskrit and came from India. Paintings and sculptures of Lohan figures emerged during the Northern Wei and became popular during the Tang Dynasty (ca. 618 to 907 CE) and Song Dynasty (ca. 960 to 1279 CE). Stone sculptures like this one were made to adorn huge Buddhist cave temples cut out of the mountains of northern and central China. Sadly many of the caves were vandalized during periods of Buddhist persecution, and the statuary was broken - probably when this fellow was separated from his body.
