Description:

East Asia, China, Song Dynasty, ca. 960 to 1279 CE; Ming Dynasty, ca. 1368 to 1644 CE. A set of 3 hand-built pottery bowls, 2 from the Ming Dynasty and 1 from the Song Dynasty. The Song Dynasty bowl exhibits a thin rim and parallel linear decorations within the basin, all in a pale blue-white glaze. Each Ming Dynasty bowl has a squat foot, a gently flared rim, and a blue-on-white decorative motif. One bowl has broad flower petals drawn around the foot while the larger shows flowers and vines on the exterior as well as an abstract avian form in the basin. Size (Song Dynasty bowl): 6.75" W x 2.5" H (17.1 cm x 6.4 cm); 3.8" H (9.7 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: ex-Nancy and Dr. E.F. Simpson collection, Los Angeles, California, USA, acquired from 1970 to 2000

  • Condition: Larger Ming bowl professionally repaired with restoration along break lines; smaller Ming bowl is intact and very good. Song bowl has restoration to petite area of rim and stabilization to one fissure stemming from rim; bowl is adhered to its modern wooden display stand and cannot be removed. Old label beneath display stand reads "Made in Hong Kong 2 1/2."
