Description:

East Asia, China, Song to early Ming dynasties, ca. 1000 to 1500 CE. Very expressive carved stone head of Buddha. Round hairless head, almond eyes with furrowed brows, expressive downturned lips, well-formed ears. I love his expression! Size: 3.5" W x 6" H (8.9 cm x 15.2 cm); 9.5" H (24.1 cm) on included custom stand.

The word ‘Buddha’ is a title, which means ‘one who is awake’ — in the sense of having ‘woken up to reality’. Buddha was born as Siddhartha Gautama in Nepal around 2,500 years ago. He did not claim to be a god or a prophet. He was a human being who became "Enlightened," understanding life in the deepest way possible. There are currently in excess of 400 million followers of the teachings of Buddha.
