Description:

Asia, China, probably Song Dynasty, 960 to 1270 CE. Hand-carved from lightly porous, grey volcanic stone, this is a near-full-sized human head with large ears, lightly incised hair, and a naturalistic face. He appears to be frozen in mid-conversation, his mouth animated, his eyes open wide and laugh lines clearly visible. Comes with custom stand. Size: 6.4" L x 4.25" W x 6.7" H (16.3 cm x 10.8 cm x 17 cm); height on stand: 13.25" (33.7 cm)

Lohan, also called Arhat, means a Buddhist ascetic; the word is a transliteration of Sanskrit and came from India. Paintings and sculptures of Lohan figures emerged during the Tang Dynasty (618 to 907 CE) and became popular - and refined - during the Song. Stone sculptures like this one were made to adorn huge Buddhist cave temples cut out of the mountains of northern and central China. Sadly many of the caves were vandalized during periods of Buddhist persecution, and the statuary was broken - probably when this fellow was separated from his body.
